On loan from the library, this book on Lowry has on its cover a picture which echoes some of the themes in my work. In the picture, we see the office clerk reclining on a wall, taken out of circulation, dreaming or playing dead. His cigarette perpendicular to his body echoes the chimneys in the distance billowing out their black dust. The clock on the left ticks away, counts down the hours, ushers in the demise of the office clerk and England’s industrial might. The compositional structure of his 'Man Lying on a Wall' (1957) highlights another theme in my work: the grid. Hidden behind a pipe, the work as presented here represents Lowry's role as outsider often overlooked or dismissed by the establishment as an amateur.
