The image in the foreground, Dead Beat Descendant, was a temporary work made from flour and coal dust sieved directly onto the gallery floor. It is an anamorphic image of a white elephant - an idiomatic expression representing a ruinous burden. I chose flour and coal dust for their links with the specific gender roles of Mr and Mrs Morel - literary figures featured in D.H. Lawrence's 'Sons and Lovers'. The elephant itself was a nod to Paul, their artistically gifted but existentially challenged son.
